If you asked for some words that best describe John, “creative” would have to be near the top of the list. With over a decade of experience in the media and entertainment industry, John delivers a unique approach to trademark, copyright, and business law to tactically build the strongest protection possible for creators, innovators and business owners. His approach was forged from firsthand experience managing commercial recording studios as well as producing and engineering records for major labels.

A member of the firm since 2018, John plays a pivotal role in the firm’s litigation practice, and has racked up some significant wins during his tenure.  These include securing a preliminary injunction in a trademark infringement case, drafting several successful motions for summary judgment, and obtaining an “exceptionality” determination under the federal Lanham Act, entitling his client to an award of attorney fees.

John also applies his skillful grasp of the written word outside of his client work.  Among other honors, he was recognized onstage during GRAMMY Week 2020 as runner-up in the Entertainment Law Initiative, a national legal writing competition sponsored by the Recording Academy. While that certainly bumps up the cool factor of our office by a few notches, he’s best known for his dedication to finding the most effective solutions for our clients.

Timothy J. Zarley is a seasoned veteran in the intellectual property field. He has filed thousands of patent and trademark applications, and handled hundreds of litigations. With this immense amount of industry experience, he lends clients his expertise to effectively navigate the intricacies of anything and everything IP. He matches our clients’ passion and enthusiasm about an idea or innovation and works to protect them as if they were his own. He’s an entrepreneur at heart and lives for the next groundbreaking idea.

Tim earned a B.S. in small business management, followed by an MBA, and then a J.D. all from Drake University. After graduation, Tim worked his way up from a clerk in 1996, becoming an associate in 1998. In 2001, Tim co-founded our firm with his father, Don Zarley.

Today, Tim carries on the Zarley legacy by working tirelessly for client success and providing top notch service in a wide variety of industries.

Ever since she joined the team in 2013, she’s worked to make sure our clients are always connected and every detail is accounted for. Her cheerful spirit creates a welcoming environment as she works across all aspects of the firm’s operation.
